Renovating a home you still have to live in

ADH Canada Inc. has been renovating houses and condo units across the GTA since 2012, from single rooms through to whole-home projects. A renovation is different from new construction because you are working inside what already exists, and what exists is rarely what the original drawings say. Our approach is to open things up carefully, tell you what we find, and keep the plan honest as the work progresses.

What opening up an older house tends to reveal

Homes in Vaughan, Toronto and the surrounding municipalities span many decades of construction practice, and the surprises are fairly consistent. Knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring, galvanized supply lines, undersized electrical service, missing or compacted insulation, out-of-level floors, previous renovations done without permits, and framing that was notched or cut by an earlier trade all turn up regularly. None of it is catastrophic on its own, but each one is a decision about scope and money, and it is better raised the week it appears than at the end.

Phasing the work around your household

Some clients move out for the duration; most cannot. Where you stay, the project gets phased so you keep a functioning bathroom and a place to cook, with the work zone sealed off, dust controlled at the source, and a clear route in and out for materials and debris. We agree in advance which days are noisy, when water or power will be off, and where the trades park and load. Pets, small children and people working from home all change how a schedule should be built, so tell us early.
